Something I found online this morning. See, ComixFan is usually a good place to go to for up-to-date comic news. And...oh, dear.

So...

Well, one of the newest articles is an interview with Claremont, who's writing Excalibur this time around. It's set in Genosha, with Prof X rebuilding it. Claremont says how excited he is about Kordey's art (where an editorial point was made: this interview took place last week, before Igor Kordey was released from his pencilling duties from the book).

Now, he didn't give much away, because now that the creative teams are set, the 'who's on which team' buzz is what is keeping the momentum up for the release of the books in May. At least, that much is what I'm extrapolating from the near-total lack of concrete info given out so far. I'm also surprised at how much I'm basing my interest levels on the appearance of characters in a given book. It's reflective, to show me what interests me in my reading selections.

Claremont has confirmed three characters. One is Charles Xavier. The second is Warren Worthington. The third name...interest is going to go through the roof.

Oh, the third name?

Rachel Summers.

...

Yeah, you heard me.

That Rachel Summers.

Okay, Mr. Claremont? While I was planning on picking up the book anyway, you just got my attention. Where Rachel was last really seen (the previous Excalibur, before getting dragged into the Cable/Scott/Jean/Maddy/Nate/Essex/Pocky continuity clusterf***s of the mid-to-late 90s) it has been said multiple times that getting back the Rachel the fans knew wouldn't happen, due to some ugly destiny crap in a far future that isn't going to happen unless the multiverse is till intact, and that's just sprocked up as it is.

I want to see this, Chris old boy. I want to see just how you're going to pull a Rachel out of that quagmire, and make it recognizable to the Rachel that we all liked. There will be changes, I'm sure. People change. Heck, your Sam is a grown-up, so I know you can do it right.

Show me.

Nnnng.

I. Am. Not. Interested.

No. Really.

I Am Not.

No, /really/. It doesn't /matter/ if the old Rachel, back in the late 100s of X-Men, and in Excalibur, was one of my favorite characters ever. No, really. It doesn't matter.

Nnng.

*cough*

Oh damn it.

And here I was hoping this was one of the ones I wouldn't have to pay attention to.

Damn, damn, damn.

Yeah, that's about right.

See, I was all 'I'm not gonna buy Excalibur.' And then a curve ball gets thrown into the mix. Par for the course, this week. ;)

Might as well buy all of 'em, except for the one with Bishop.

I can just hear Warren now.

"You're not Rachel! You're Kung Fu Creatures on the Rampage...TWO!"

Someone else saw that Garfield cartoon besides me?

I might end up doing the same, except I'm not into Emma or Mystique much. Also, is Randy Green any good?

I'm still mostly waiting on the lineups before I decide what I'm gonna buy, but this...my word. Didn't see this coming.

Me too, but I had assumed that this was going to be one of the ones I didn't need to care about. Man. *insert whiney tone here*

Well, while I'm sure there's some cross-continuity going on, one book a month might not be bad? :)

Sorry to upset you so, though. Interesting news.

I was wondering if someone would get the reference...TWO!

I often get the reference. But, in context, wouldn't Warren be saying that to Betsy?

I got it too.

And Chris is going to bring Rachel back the same way he brought Kitty back in X-Treme.

I.E. "it doesn't matter what happened in continuity before this issue. What matter is she's back, I'm Claremont, and YOU LIKE IT!"

[whether I actually will like it remains to be seen. I am not mad about his current Kitty]

Only if Bety were the one they brought back, and Marvel's "no coming back from the dead anymore" rule might prevent that. If you come from some screwball alternate future you can probably circumvent that.

Oh, I'm not upset. My /wallet's/ upset, but I'm not.

Claremont's Excalibur will KICK ASS. *Again*.

I would like to see in the book a concrete explanation of why a book set in Genosha is using the name of the British team, however. Based on past behavior, I give Chris about a 78% likelihood of fulfilling this.
