Musing, 4/9/03 part 1
Apr. 9th, 2003 02:05 pm9:59 AM-
Ouch. Sort-of overslept again. I admit I've been going to bed later, but I figured 6 hours of sleep would keep me functional. Which it has, but I'm not as energetic as I should be. On the plus side, my down mood has receded a bit, so it seems back to normal.
I need to check again at lunch. I usually use Comics Unlimited to check and see what comics are coming out each Wednesday. And there's some, but I forget most of the particulars. Comics, in a given month, are divided among a 4-week schedule, coming into the shops on Wednesdays. But, like a few times of the year, there are 5 Wednesdays this month, so the comics companies spread out the schedule a little. I understand the reasoning, but it makes for some slow weeks in the middle weeks of the month. You know, those weeks when you get two, maybe three comics. :P It's a little more than that this time, but I need to really sit down and redo my reserve list for the shop. There's books getting cancelled left and right, but new titles coming in as it is. That, right now, is one of the major frustrations of being a comics fan: a lack of...consistency. You could wake up one morning, and *pow* there's another book you like getting canned, with some characters you like getting put into Comic Limbo for some ungodly lentgh of time.
(Note for Readers: Comic Limbo (noun, place); The place comic characters go when they're not appearing in any regular title, which the readers never see.)
I wonder about that. Like...do I keep reading some of the comics I do read because I know they're popular enough that they won't get cancelled anytime soon? I wonder which comics I really enjoy, and which I'm still getting just to ensure some month-to-month stability in my comic book reading.
I could go over a list of which comics are the ones I really, really look forward to reading, but I dare not jinx it. Every time I admit I have certain titles that are my absolute faves, one of two things happen.
1) They get cancelled. (Young Justice, New Warriors)
2) The creative team changes drastically, with the new creators basically ignoring anything that happened in previous issues, with the artwork sucking, especially. (X-Force, Titans, Thunderbolts)
Not quoting any favorites right now, since I'll end up losing those, too. ;) Note: This doesn't work if I'm lying, so me saying "Oh, they're so Kewl! I wish Morrison and Millar would write every comic for ever and ever and ever..." will not make them immediately retire and leave my comics alone.
But oh, man, I wish it did...
