Well,
occamsnailfile asked me so nicely, and I hope I remember what all I did read after my last LJ post on the previous week of comics. And, new comics come out soon, but due to money I'll be getting them late again. Thursday or Friday-before-game, I'm not sure yet.
Negation #21. Yeah, I do like Crossgen. And, while I have some vague idea of what the big overlying storyline is, I don't know all of it. Most of the CG books are stand-alone, with the Big Picture in the background. But, I think this also does it sell, stands alone as a space-opera book, while being really into the Big Picture thing. When the War storyline starts next year, this book might be one of the books at the forefront of it all (Along with The First, Solus, and Crux. The rest will have tangental involvement at best, I think.)
Negation is fun, even with ignoring all the background stuff. The characters are very, very real, though we do end up with one less by the issue's end *sniffle*. And, they have a new colorist, Laura Martin, who has previous praise for being the colorist on Ruse.
But I have issues with Ruse. Namely, the fact that it's been sucking golf balls through garden hoses after Waid left.
New X-Men #145: I read this once, blinked a lot of times. Then, I turned the book upside down, and read it again, and it made a little more sense when I tried this. Blaming, of course, Morrison's sparse, indirect writing style with 1-D characters. I think this involved Cyclops, Wolverine, and Storm Shad-er, Fantomex going after some uber-bio-tech-mutant and something about a satellite.
As for Bachalo's art...I like his earlier stuff. Now, I never say that about any one. I hear that all the time, abotu authors, music groups, comics, actors (and usually I hear that about 2 minutes after I really get into the media. I suck: I can never fit in.). But his earlier artwork was a lot cleaner and less muddled, while still retaining the pop-art style he's known for. Here, it's crossed the 'quirky' line, going to indecipherable. Sad, really, because I liked him.
Only other time I've ever used the 'earlier stuff was better' comment was about Green Day. Their music hasn't matured; they lost their edge. There's a difference.
But, next issue, we get Jiminez back. Yay! And, if the sources that
iceraver's source are telling the truth...it's going to get really messed up. If it's the truth, though.
JLA/Avengers #1
Note One: I like Perez. I love the attention to detail, and the faces and figures and tech and all that neat stuff. Note Two: I like Busiek, with his attention to detail, continuity, and characterization.
And together...I dunno. I liked it, but wasn't all orgasmic 'Oh wow cool!' about it. I kinda blame this on my waning interest in Avengers and JLA as comics. But...eh. It was good. Nice art, nice little bits, but I wasn't floored.
Okay, and I think that's it for this past week.
