Dec. 16th, 2003 09:00 pmIn a few hours...it will end. Seriously.
Okay, yeah, this is a LotR post. Shameless, but I admit it.
See, the gag is this. After this movie, there won't be any more. Sure, Peter Jackson is considering The Hobbit after he takes on King Kong, but still.
But LotR...it's an institution in itself among geekdom. Always has been. Of course, I only got through the books once when I was fourteen, and felt that it was...way overlong. *ducks the thrown tomatoes*. Sorry, folks, but I have to say what I feel. A lot of detail which made us see how keen Tolkien's world was, but...to a 14 year coming off the buzz from reading the Hobbit for the first time, it's a kick in the head.
And when I heard about the movies...hello, skeptic! I really didn't think it would fly. It was a fantasy film, and we see how well /those/ are received (even if I thought Willow was kinda neat.)
So, that was how I found myself seeing Fellowship. See, despite people's praises who saw it earlier (like
gamerguy), I was still skeptical. In the theatre...I have told this story before, but it's important.
Rod, my friend for the evening: Kyle...what are you doing?
Me, hands clasped in front of my face muttering: Please don't suck. Please don't suck. God, please don't let the movie suck.
Rod: Kyle? What...?
Me: Praying, Rod.
Rod: Why?
Me: Because it worked for X-Men.
Rod: Seriously.
Me: Look...this is the last chance the fantasy fans really have. Most fantasy movies blow chunks, let's be realistic. But this...this is the Big One. It wins out, we have a renewed interest. If not, the genre is sunk, period.
And...movie didn't suck. Kyle was happy.
Neither did Two Towers. But since I wasn't a fan of that book, I found the movie fun because it didn't give me the same feeling the book did (translation: zzzzzzzzzz).
But this...this is it. The End. I've read the books. You can't sequel this. No chance. No way.
And Prequels are BAD. The Star Wars Movies taught us this (I said it when I first heard, 2 years before Phantom Menace: I want to know what happens /after./ There's no surprise about the /before/ because we know how it ends.) Maybe...the Hobbit would fly, but that's the exception that proves the rule.
I will always have the movies on DVD. I know that much. But you lose some of the magic after seeing it the first time, I think. So, I go into this with mixed feelings, at least. I will miss the anticipation, easily.
Well, off to nap. Later.
